The Research Centre

We are continuing our research into the Holocaust in Belgium and Northern France unabated.

Every day, the research centre of Kazerne Dossin digitizes original documents, photographs and records on the Holocaust in Belgium and Northern France and stores them in an image bank. The image bank comprises more than 1.5 million documents and is expanding every day. In addition to donations from individuals and organizations we digitize collections of other Belgian museums and archives.

The research team of Kazerne Dossin conducts targeted research, shares expertise in networks and with third parties, holds lectures and issues publications. Their goal is to gain and give further insight into the past and put a face to the deported Jews and Roma.

The image bank comprises more than 1.5 million documents, bundled in collections. Collections can be compiled in different ways. For example, there are family archives about one person or one family, and documents from organisations, the occupying forces or various government services. The overview of what has been digitised so far can also be consulted online. You can only consult the collections themselves in the reading room of Kazerne Dossin or its partner institutions.

All portraits that were – so far – found of deported Jews and Roma deported from the Dossin barracks can be viewed online as well. These photographs can also be seen on the portrait wall in the museum. Photographs of Belgian Jews who ended up in French assembly camps such as Drancy can be found here as well.
In addition you can also view the transport lists of the Dossin barracks online. On these documents you will find the names of all deportees per train transport. Read more about the transports from Mechelen.

Do you have photos, letters, documents from deportees and their families or objects, newspapers, posters, etc., from the period of the Second World War? These objects often hide a wealth of information. You could entrust all this material to Kazerne Dossin as a donation.
